The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), in conjunction with the Chicago Park District, is building an underpass for the Lakefront Trail beneath Solidarity Drive. This underpass will eliminate walkers, runners and bicyclists from having to cross Solidarity Drive, which has been a very difficult crossing during the busy summer months.
The first phases of construction will be Wednesday, April 23rd and will be completed in Late 2008, with landscaping being completed in Spring 2009.

Once completed, the underpass will provide uninterrupted access for Trail users, improving safety and access and helping ease
congestion in the area. The project also includes construction of a cul-de-sac for Museum Campus Circle Drive
allowing more convenient, direct access to the Shedd Aquarium. The Burnham Harbor parking lot will also be
reconfigured to eliminate its current Trail crossing.

Expect traffic delays while traveling to the East Side of Burnham Harbor, and the Yacht Club. Consider leaving early or staying later to avoid having to travel during the peak times when the Shedd and Adler are in operation. You can also park in the West Parking lot and take the tender to your boat.
Expect traffic delays, lane closures and lane reductions down to 1 lane Eastbound and 1 lane Westbound on Solidarity Drive during this construction project.

As always, proceed with caution in this construction zone watching out closely for construction workers and pedestrians alike. Before too long, the construction will be completed and a wonderful new underpass will be open for all to enjoy.
For more details, you can download the presentation that was given by the City of Chicago which contains more details on what will be happening during the reconstruction here.
